Job Details

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Electrical Energy Management Group within the Faculty of Engineering. The Group researches underpinning power electronics, electrical drives, and electrical generation technologies that have a vital role to play in managing energy and improving conversion efficiency, affording ‘game-changes' in low carbon transport systems and renewable energy supply. The group comprises an interdisciplinary team of 9 academic staff, 16 PDRAs and 16 PhD students. The group's research portfolio exceeds £7M in active grants. The group collaborates closely with a number of industry partners.

Recent award of research funding has generated an opportunity for the appointment of a researcher in power electronics and motor drives to support the Group's research into wide-bandgap (WBG) device based motor drive systems. The research will focus on investigating insulation degradation and lifetime of inverter-fed machines with fast switching (high dv/dt) converters and its mitigation strategies.  The post will form part of an interdisciplinary team of post-doctoral researchers and postgraduates investigating power electronic conversion concepts.

You are expected to have experience in circuit design of power electronics systems, application of wide-bandgap devices (SiC, GaN) and motor drive systems. Applicants with further background in electric machine design, winding insulation, finite element analysis, high speed circuit design and high bandwidth current/voltage measurement are particularly encouraged to apply.

The post-holder will work very closely with other leading UK universities, industrial partners and the UK National Centre for Power Electronics. The post provides an ideal opportunity to undertake high quality research in the field. The post-holder will be encouraged and supported to attend international conferences, and to publish research findings in high-impact journals.

This position is offered on a full time, open-ended contract, with funding for an initial period of up to 3 years.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Xibo Yuan at xibo.yuan@bristol.ac.uk

Interviews will take place shortly after the application deadline.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
