Job Details

Sustainable Minerals Institute

One of the UQ's eight research institutes, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) consists of some 240 staff and postgraduate students covering the areas of mining and geology, mineral processing, environment and rehabilitation, social responsibility, safety and risk, water and unconventional gas. SMI is industry-focused and consequently works with many leading global resources companies and many small-medium enterprises and suppliers. SMI interacts strongly with governments and community.

The Institute recognises and values equity and diversity, and encourages applications from any individual who meets the requirements of this position irrespective of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, age or other protected attributes. SMI strives to provide an inclusive working environment, and along with the University is committed to supporting staff with family and caring responsibilities by providing policies, programs and initiatives to help balance work and family responsibilities.

Information about the Institute may be accessed on the Institute's web site at http://www.uq.edu.au/smi.

The Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation (CMLR) and Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI)

Are within UQ's Sustainable Minerals Institute. We conduct research related to sustainable water and environmental management related to mines and mine regions. We aim to develop technologies for the measurement, modelling and management of water and the environment in the context of the mine life cycle. Both CMLR and CWiMI have a portfolio of research and consultancy projects in Australia, Latin America, Europe and Asia. We emphasise the importance of national and international collaboration and engagement. Research methods include laboratory work, field monitoring, remote sensing, developing and testing new statistical and simulation models and GIS tools, applying and improving application of existing models, and desktop review.

The role

The role focuses on mine waste management, and design and assessment of post-mining landforms in relation to management of water, sediments and contaminants. The position will develop and lead a physical science and engineering research group in this area, including developing new projects, technical leadership of projects, project management and research student recruitment and supervision. The position will provide expert advice and consultancy services to the mining sector. Collaboration with a range of relevant experts within and outside UQ will be necessary to complement the expertise of the appointed person, for example geochemists, hydrologists, geotechnical engineers, ecologists, soil scientists and social scientists. A limited amount of teaching will be undertaken (maximum one module per year).

The joint appointment with CMLR and CWiMI reflects an emphasis on research towards sustainable closure of mines and post-closure environmental performance, and the strong overlap with operational aspects of water and waste management.

The person

The successful applicant will require a PhD qualification in relevant discipline and have an established international reputation for quality and impact of work through publication or exhibition in internationally-recognised outlets. You will have demonstrated expert knowledge in conducting and managing field work as well as an ability to effectively engage at a University and wider community level, including industry, government and civil society organisations.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and actively encourages applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Please refer to the University's Diversity and Inclusion webpage (https://staff.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/human-resources/diversity) for further information and points of contact if you require additional support.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
