Job Details

This post will be based in the Human Biomaterials Resource Centre (HBRC) which resides within the Advanced Therapies Facility in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences. The HBRC is an HTA licensed, ethically approved human sample biorepository, dedicated to the collection and storage of appropriately consented, quality-assured human biomaterials for distribution to biomedical research groups both in academia and industry. The facility provides sample processing, tissue based histological and analytical services, and hosts valuable sample collections (including samples collected from participants in clinical trials). The role of the HBRC is to facilitate the funding and expedition of high quality clinical research. It is a valuable resource, not only for local scientists, but also for researchers throughout the UK and overseas, including the commercial sector. The HBRC is a quality controlled environment regulated by both the MHRA and the HTA.

The role of the post holder is to support ongoing clinical research projects being supported by the HBRC, which involve the collection of samples from human participants. This will involve the identification and recruitment of appropriate patients in a variety of clinic settings (and on occasion healthy volunteers), obtaining informed consent, sample collection and processing according to project protocols and HBRC Standard Operating Procedures and completion of the necessary records and electronic tracking logs.

Some of the larger projects will require a significant amount of co-ordination and oversight in terms of patient accrual, recruitment and sample collection, transfer and tracking across a number of local participating NHS sites. The post holder will require strong organisational skills and good communication skills to ensure effective interaction with patients, clinicians, surgeons and the basic science and clinical research communities.
