  • Administrative experience
  • Experience of research in the biomedical/health sciences or Engineering and Physical Sciences, within a University or NHS Trust
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of research management issues such as research governance, ethical review, data protection, intellectual property, preferably within a University and/or NHS Trust environment for the MDS post.
  • Knowledge of research funding mechanisms in the UK and overseas
  • Detailed understanding of research grant application processes
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Excellent IT skills, including familiarity with maintaining and updating electronic databases
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • Excellent inter-personal skills; ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of staff and external contacts.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of people at all levels
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to plan and organise a large workload to meet both internal and external deadlines
  • Proven report writing skills
  • Enthusiastic, with a proactive approach

  • Sitting within Research Support Services (RSS) at the University of Birmingham, the Research Support Officer post is an integral part of delivering research support to academics. We have multiple posts open for Research Support Officer sitting within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences (MDS) and Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS).

    The Post holder will sit within the Research Development and Support Team (RDST) and facilitate the smooth delivery of administrative support for external research funding, taking on a range of roles relating to the preparation and submission of research funding applications and tenders.

    This post involves supporting the Research Facilitators (RFs) to deliver pre-award grant development support to academic researchers in the College. The RFs give advice, support and guidance at all stages of the application development process, and you will work closely with them to support the portfolio of proposals in the development pipeline, through to submission to the funder.

    Specifically, the post holder will provide responsive support to ensure grant proposals are costed properly, undergo peer review, and applicants can access a range of resources and training materials that will assist with grant development.

    The post holder will report directly to the RDM, and will also work closely with the Institute/School Manager, colleagues in the College R&KT Office as well as other teams in RSS and across the wider research support infrastructure of the University to ensure seamless delivery of activity.

    This position provides an ideal opportunity to work within a demanding, multidisciplinary clinical and scientific research environment, and will involve interactions with a wide range of organisations and individuals.
