Heilbronn Chair in Combinatorics

The School of Mathematics, University of Bristol, is seeking to appoint a Heilbronn Chair in Combinatorics. We are seeking applicants who have demonstrated, or shown potential for, the highest achievement in any area of combinatorics, broadly interpreted.

The University of Bristol is investing £33m in an extensive remodelling and renovation project, converting the grade II listed Fry Building into a new home for the School of Mathematics. At the heart of the University campus, the Fry Building will provide outstanding facilities for students and staff befitting a world-leading mathematics department. 

Due for completion in 2018/19, new suites of teaching and study spaces, lecture and seminar rooms will be integrated with offices and work spaces designed to foster academic interaction. Students and staff will benefit from a variety of new indoor and outdoor social spaces. The heritage of the Fry building, dating back to 1880, combined with these modern facilities will provide a unique environment for teaching and research in mathematics, with space for future expansion.

The successful candidate will be based at the Institute for Pure Mathematics, one of five newly established research institutes in the School. The post- holder will be responsible for their own research programme, carry out appropriate administrative tasks and deliver excellence in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The Institute for Pure Mathematics is internationally recognised with interests spanning pure mathematics, including combinatorics, geometry, algebra, number theory and logic and set theory. The Institute has strong links with the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research, which focuses on discrete mathematics, funds around 25 postdoctoral fellows in the School of Mathematics, and runs a co-ordinated series of research programmes, conferences and workshops.

The successful candidate must have a doctorate in mathematics or closely related subject, an internationally leading research profile as well as a clear vision for future research directions. The ability to teach a broad range of topics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level is essential.
