Project "Voicing the News, Voicing History. Songs, Ballads and Broadsheets as Vocal Media in Early Modern Germany and Switzerland" 100%, fixed term, four years

The Department of History at the University of Basel, Switzerland invites applications for two four-year PhD positions in History. The positions are scheduled to begin in January, 2019.

Your position

The successful candidates will be members of the research group "Vocal Power. Vocality in Early Modern Media and Politics", funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and directed by Prof. Dr. Jan-Friedrich Missfelder. The project explores the political, cultural and social functions of voice in 17thand 18thcentury politics, society and media practices in the German speaking lands. It particularly investigates the role songs and ballads had to play in the establishment of an early modern media landscape and the vocal agency of street singers, heralds, towncriers, orators and preachers as in the process of shaping the early modern public sphere. Within this general frame the holders of the two PhD positions will be pursuing individual research projects on the representation of news and actualities and, respectively, the construction of history in songs and ballad broadsheets.
