Job Details

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, the section for Manufacturing Engineering has a vacant 2-year postdoc position in the recently granted project “Metal Microstructures in Four Dimensions”.

The project is supported by the European Research Council via an Advanced Grant.
It aims at :

  • developing a universal laboratory based 4D X-ray microscope with potentials in the broad field of materials science and beyond
  • advancing metals research by quantifying local microstructural variations using the new 4D tool and by including effects hereof in the understanding and modelling of industrially relevant metals.

Responsibilities and tasks

The overall task for the postdoc is to develop the new 4D X-ray microscope with a spatial resolution of 2-3 micrometers. This is significantly better than is currently possible at laboratory-based systems, and shall be achieved via modifications to the existing, commercially available LabDCT system. Expanding the resolution limits of laboratory diffraction tomography will help broaden the addressable application space and thereby allow new material science topics to be quantified in 3D.

Improvement of the spatial resolution will involve both redesign of the X-ray tomography equipment as well as development of new routines for scanning and analysing diffraction patterns.

The candidate will work in close collaboration with a group of senior scientists, technicians as well as postdocs and PhDs all engaged in the ERC project “Metal Microstructures in Four Dimensions”. Also, the work will involve collaboration with international partners in the UK and in France as well as with the Danish Company Xnovo Technology ApS.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent in physics or materials science.
Furthermore, the candidate must demonstrate a strong background within (listed in order of importance):

  • X-ray diffraction, preferably experience in diffraction contrast X-ray tomography
  • Crystallography
  • Reconstruction of grain microstructures from diffraction data
  • Programming in C/C++, Matlab or Python
  • Metallurgy

Excellent English communication skills are essential.
