SENIOR OPERATIONS MANAGER

JOB PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Deputy Director: Systems and Operations, the portfolio of the Senior Operations Manager manages the Research Outputs Unit, the DRI Publications Unit, and is responsible for financial management, both of the DRI departmental budgets, as well as for external grants and research entities annual compliance reporting. The portfolio also provides HR management support for the DRI management team and oversees the Department's messenger and tea assistant.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Strategic management: 
    • Enhancing and building on the reputation and image of the University of Pretoria by providing operational and financial services to support the research and internationalisation goals of UP, with a strong focus on customer equity;
  • Operations management: 
    • Creating opportunities for optimal performance by supplying adequate and required operational and logistical support systems for the DRI management; 
  • Financial management: 
    • Managing the budget for the Division, as well as overseeing grant budget compliance;
  • Research Outputs Unit for DHET subsidy: 
    • Managing the central collation, quality control and annual submission of all Research Outputs to DHET; 
  • HR management: 
    • Managing the HR for the Department in liaison with the HR Department of the University; 
  • Publications and web: 
    • Managing the Department's website and other publications. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Honours degree or BEng degree;
  • Eight years' relevant work experience of which five years are at management level; 
  • Extensive experience in a large corporate, research or university environment managing operational functions, including HR line management;
  • Management level experience in cost centre accounting, financial management, budget planning and compliance control; 
  • Extensive experience in compiling senior management reports, and managing multiple datasets for management information provision;
  • A valid driver's licence.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge of financial administration;
  • Technically advanced in MS Excel and Excel pivot tables, and the graphic representation of data;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Technically competent in writing business reports;
  • Ability to deal with complexity;
  • Independent planning ability;
  • Persuasive with excellent negotiation conflict management skills;
  • Ability to work to multiple tight deadlines and the systematic management of numerous parallel-running, non-routine tasks;
  • Ability to work with stakeholders in a matrix management environment.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Management qualification;
  • Master's degree;
  • Work experience in a research administration environment.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 660 186 to R 818 975 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University's contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
