Postdoc position in UAVs and Geophysics

Job Details

A two year postdoc position is available at DTU Space (Denmark).

Focus is on UAV-based geophysics (Magnetics/Lidar/Georadar/EMI): Data acquisition/processing as well as sensor integration on UAVs.

Starting date: November 1st 2018 or soon thereafter.

The Geomagnetism Department at DTU Space in Copenhagen (Denmark) currently leads two major UAV projects (MuVerDrone: 2018-2021 and UAV-QMS: 2017-2021) with the purposes of developing UAVs for UXO detection, archaeology, mineral exploration and geoscience research.

You can read about these new projects at http://www.space.dtu.dk/english/research/research_divisions/geomagnetism/projects

We focus on integrating various geophysical sensors (hardware- and software-wise) on different UAV platforms (multirotor UAVs and VTOL hybrid fixed-wing UAVs). We test the systems in the field and use the data for real-life applications and fundamental research.

Our main focus is currently magnetic sensor systems for which we design and test various setups, including towed magnetometer birds and front-boom systems, which are mounted directly on UAVs.

We expect other geophysical sensors, such as Lidar, Georadar or EMI, to be in the pipeline within the period of the advertised postdoc position.

You will initially be in charge of the processing and interpretation of magnetic data from UAV field campaigns using either “Geosoft Oasis Montaj” or your own software, which may be an add-on to our existing software package (Python).

You will use these results for iterative improvements of the magnetometer systems and data processing related to the UAVs (for example by ideas on how to reduce/remove of magnetic noise from the UAV platform etc.). Initial field campaigns will take place in Denmark but campaigns are to be expected in northern Sweden, Norway and Greenland.

You are expected to work closely together with other people in the group, in particular, another PhD student already specialized in magnetic data acquisition and processing as well as our electro-mechanical aerospace engineer who is in charge of designing and building the magnetometer integration with the various UAVs.

If qualifications permit, we would like you to work with integration and data processing/interpretation of other sensor systems, such as Lidar, Georadar or EMI, that are complementary to the magnetic signal of the subsurface.

Qualifications

You must hold a PhD in geophysics, engineering or similar at the time of employment.

  • You must have a strong background in math, physics and programming (preferably Python).
  • You must have a key interest in working with magnetic data, despite being specialized in fx Georadar, Lidar or EMI.
  • Experience with geophysical data acquisition/processing/interpretation is crucial.
  • Priority is given to candidates with experience in airborne or UAV-borne magnetic data but other sensor types, such as also in Lidar, Georadar or EMI systems are of interest as well.
  • A fundamental technical and/or practical knowledge of UAVs is beneficial but not crucial. Likewise, is a basic knowledge of GNSS-IMU systems.
  • Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU Space. We expect you to take responsibility of your own work but at the same time to thrive on collaboration and teamwork.

The success of your project depends to a high degree on collaboration with colleagues at DTU Space. Hence, you believe in dialogue and feedback as the best foundation for sound decision-making

The Geomagnetism Department at DTU Space currently holds 16-18 full-time employees (PhD students, postdocs, research assistants, scientists, engineers, administrative personnel) as well as 5-6 M.Sc. students. We specialize in all aspects of the Earth's magnetic field (core, lithosphere, and external).

The “drone group” is a new and growing segment within the Geomagnetism Department. The group is led by Senior Scientist Arne Døssing. In addition, we are 1 PhD student (geophysics), 3 research assistants (geophysics/engineering), 1 geomagnetic engineer, and 1 external consultant in aerospace-engineering. We expect 2 new Postdocs in geophysics and engineering in beginning of 2019.
