Lecturer / senior lecturer / associate professor (one post)

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be required to:

  • Teach at undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels in the programmes of landscape architecture and architecture;
  • Actively undertake original research or contract research projects that lead to research outcomes/publications;
  • Participate in the department's community service programmes;
  • Act as study leader/supervisor for postgraduate students;
  • Assist with administrative duties as determined by the head of department.

 

Minimum requirements:

Lecturer:

  • Master's degree in landscape architecture or a four-year bl degree in landscape architecture with extensive (10+ years') practice experience;
  • Registered or registerable with sacap/saclap or other comparable international professional councils;
  • A minimum of three years' proven practice experience in the built environment;
  • Experience in lecturing at tertiary level.

 

Senior lecturer (same as for lecturer, plus):

  • Phd in landscape architecture or a phd in a related field with experience in landscape architecture/management;
  • A publications record.

 

Associate professor (same as for senior lecturer, plus):

  • A publication record in indexed academic journals;
  • A minimum of five years' proven practice experience in the built environment;
  • Experience in lecturing at tertiary level and supervising postgraduate research.

 

Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes):

  • Good language and communication skills;
  • Good computer skills (cad related);
  • Good administrative and coordination skills;
  • Undertaking to further own academic qualifications and research output.
  • Willingness and ability to engage directly with research on taking up office;

 

Added advantages and preferences:

  • Experience in resource efficient landscape design and landscape construction technology;
  • Experience in planting design and plant selection;
  • Experience in (hand) drawing or drawing programmes: cad, sketchup, photoshop, revit, etc;
  • Evidence of academic writing skills such as publications in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings;
  • Ability to initiate relevant research, or undertake contract research, in the departmental research fields and related aspects;
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have already embarked on or completed phd studies;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with extended periods of practical experience.

 

The department of architecture is grounded in an ecosystemic design approach and would welcome candidates with a similar philosophy and experience (practice/teaching) in the field.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by up policy guidelines. Up subscribes to the bestmed and umvuzo medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
