The manager: Distance Education provides strategic leadership for the distance education initiative of the Faculty of Education. The incumbent of the post specifically provides leadership in the Unit for Distance Education and manages all processes relevant to the development, implementation, tracking and evaluation of distance education programmes in the Faculty of Education. The manager advises the University on matters related to distance education and represents the University in the external environment on matters to distance education.

Requirements:

  • A master's degree in Education or a relevant field;
  • A minimum of 10 years' managerial experience of which five should be in distance education;, Quality assurance experience, focusing on the monitoring and evaluation of projects and processes.
  • A thorough understanding of the distance education sector and environment, nationally and internationally;
  • Proven strategic management and leadership skills;, The ability to liaise and negotiate at a senior level;
  • The ability to apply analytical and innovative thinking to provide direction to new initiatives;
  • Change management and participative management style;, Administrative management skills;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;, Facilitation and conflict resolution skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills at individual and group level;, Computer literacy (MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel);
  • Basic understanding of programme development and the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in distance education;
  • A good understanding of the theory of distance education;, High level of mobility in order to respond to challenges at all national sited of delivery in the country.

 

Desirable:

  • A doctoral degree in Education or related field; 
  • A postgraduate management qualification (e.g. MBA);
  • Managerial experience at an institution of higher learning.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 735 063 to R 936 871 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University's contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
