Background:

The teaching development grant national collaborative project: strengthening academic staff development in mathematical and statistical sciences in south africa was launched in 2017 and is funded by the department of higher education and training (dhet). It is a national collaborative project established to support the development of better qualified in-service mathematics and statistics academics at all higher education institutions in south africa. The project aims to achieve its mandate by supporting entry-level and new-generation academics to engage in postgraduate studies; enhancing student learning and academic success through a sustained focus on improving the quality and impact of university lecturers; developing and enhancing the ability of university lecturers to supervise postgraduate student research through pedagogical competency and improved qualifications, resulting in academics well-grounded in their disciplines.

The university of pretoria (up) is the lead institution on this project and it will be led by the dean of the faculty of natural and agricultural sciences at the university. The dean will be assisted by an academic leader in the day to day running of it.

Responsibilities:

The university of pretoria is seeking a project officer with innovative ideas, excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, knowledge of how the higher education sector works (specifically in sciences), to provide efficient and effective administrative support and assistance to ensure the excellent, smooth and successful management of the above national collaborative project. This will include:

  • Managing costs/expenses within the approved budget to achieve cost efficiencies;
  • Assisting with preparation and submission of budgetary reports adhering to deadlines;
  • Processing orders/invoices/receipts/claims and keeping a record thereof;
  • Administering and processing tdg-grant applications;
  • Managing financial reports from beneficiaries;
  • Ensuring compliance with governance in terms of legislative and audit requirements;
  • Liaising with dhet and other stakeholders as indicated in the grant agreement;
  • Organising meetings, arranging venues and making travel arrangements where necessary;
  • Attending all relevant meetings, preparing and distributing minutes afterwards;
  • Preparing and providing timeous and accurate activity and management information;
  • Performing ad hoc duties, from time to time, as agreed between the project co-ordinator/academic leader.

 

Minimum requirements:

  • An honours degree; 
  • A minimum of five years' experience in:
  • Thorough working knowledge of applicable computer programmes (ms word, excel, powerpoint, e-mail, google drive sharing and the internet);
  • Knowledge and experience in a project management related environment;
  • Experience in a multi-cultural, collaborative project.

 

Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes):

  • Data manipulation skills and the ability to compile reports;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Performance under pressure in a relatively unstructured environment;
  • Independence and attention to detail;
  • Friendliness and willingness to help.

 

Added advantages and preferences:

  • Knowledge and experience in the use of the university's financial system;
  • Advanced proficiency in ms office: word, excel, and powerpoint;
  • Experience in managing the logistical arrangements for events.

 

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by up policy guidelines.
