Job Details
This EPSRC project aims at developing an innovative fibre placement technology for manufacturing defect-free complex composite structures, by enabling the Continuous Tow Shearing process on three-dimensional surfaces. This novel technology will have a capability of eliminating the fibre wrinkling defect in the process of steering the lay-up paths, which was inevitable for producing complex composite components and is the major limitation of the current automated fibre placement (AFP) technology.
The role-holder will work as part of a team to study the fibre rearrangement in complex tow deformations and develop a robot head control algorithm to minimise the fibre wrinkling defects in 3D Continuous Tow Shearing process. The developed algorithm will be implemented in a computer-aided design software tool to automatically generate the robot path. The researcher will collaborate with other team members who carry out robot integration and manufacturing tests.
The project is supported by Airbus, BAE Systems, National Composites Centre, and ABB robotics, which will provide an excellent opportunity for industrial engagement.
The ideal candidate will have preferably a PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with strong experience in material deformation characterisation of impregnated or unimpregnated composite preforms and material modelling and with some background on computer-aided design and finite element analysis. Experience in using industrial robots is advantageous.
This post is offered on an open-ended term contract for up to 24 months with a possible extension.
