Job Purpose

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) opened on 1 April 2017 with the aim of using cutting edge experimental medicine to accelerate access to, and adoption of, drugs, devices and diagnostics tests for patients living with chronic inflammatory diseases.The NIHR Birmingham BRC brings together the expertise of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) and the University of Birmingham, both members of Birmingham Health Partners (BHP), and is one of 20 NHS and University partnerships across England that have been awarded funding through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

This clinical research fellow post is funded by the NIHR Birmingham BRC in conjunction with Novo Nordisk and will be based in Centre for Liver and Gastrointestinal Research laboratories within the Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy at the University of Birmingham. The post will be largely laboratory-based although there may be opportunities for involvement in clinical research as well. There will also be extensive opportunities to interact with the Novo Nordisk R&D team in Copenhagen.

The post will report to Professor Philip Newsome, and will be supervised by a team of senior scientists (Dr Lalor & Dr Weston) and clinicians (Dr Armstrong). The role will also include clinical training in the multi-disciplinary NAFLD clinic at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

 

Person Specification

Essential:

  • MRCP /MRCS or equivalent
  • Full General Medical Council Registration with a Licence to Practice.
  • Understanding and experience of research methods and processes
  • Medical degree.
  • Possession of MRCP (or equivalent).

Desirable:

  • Demonstrable research experience such as a BSc Upper Second Class Honours, Masters or equivalent.
  • Understanding and experience of research methods and processes related to the study of chronic inflammatory diseases
  • Research publications
