Job Details

Are you an experienced and ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have a background in block copolymer/RNA complexation?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research intensive Universities?

This role is linked to Impact Acceleration Funding from EPSRC, which enables industry and academia to work in collaboration on an applied scientific project. This project will use recent progress in our research group, which has demonstrated the possibility of using diblock copolymers we synthesize to complex biopesticide molecules (e.g. RNA). This enables efficient transport and delivery of the biopesticides to the gut of targeted insects.

You will build on the recent progress to expand the range of both diblock copolymers and RNA explored, to optimise the complexation process, the resulting particle size of the RNA/polymer complexes and the efficiency of the biopesticide activity when delivered to the insects. You will concentrate on thoroughly characterising the properties of the complex particles, via a range of techniques from chemical analysis (spectroscopies) and light scattering methods, to electron microscopy, with the intention of writing a first publication draft for these data within the project period. Depending on progress, you will also have the opportunity of carrying out some biological studies of both the stability of the RNA when complexed with the polymer and the efficiency of its delivery to the animal guts. This will be in collaboration with another researcher in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Leeds.

Holding a PhD (or close to completion) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a closely allied discipline, you will have a strong background in colloid and polymer suspension characterisation, and knowledge of living radical polymerisation techniques.
