Role Description

To make a valuable and innovative contribution to the teaching effort of the Discipline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. The position has an important role in the development and teaching of health curriculum predominantly in nursing and midwifery.

The Discipline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health has many roles including the recruitment, retention and progression of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across all fields of health. The role the Discipline plays in student support and mentoring is essential for this to happen.

The Universities of Newcastle and New England through the Joint Med ical Program has a national and international reputation for their significant contribution and success in the graduation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors.

Role Responsibilities And Typical Activities

  • Provide leadership in implementing the values and objectives of the Wollotuka Cultural Standards.
  • Collaborate with other staff of Wollotuka Institute and the Indigenous Education and Research Innovation portfolio.
  • Create a positive and inclusive work environment; respect differences and make people feel valued.
  • Deliver research and innovation impact in Indigenous Health through the delivery of quality publications/creative works, grant applications and conference presentations with an established national, and a growing international profile.
  • Active participation as a member in thematic research areas delivering outputs in alignment with the Institute's research themes.
  • Deliver research outputs that:
    • Support the sustainability endeavours of the Institute
    • Are collaborative and inter-disciplinary in their approach
    • Are innovative in their application
    • Embed digital literacy, combine physical and digital capability and engage with digital culture.
  • With the support of mentors/supervisors, co - supervise higher degree research (HDR) students, and co-publish with HDR students.
  • Actively participate in the teaching programs of the Discipline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health particularly those in Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery.
    • Conduct tutorials, practical classes and workshops.
    • Preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
    • Assessment preparation, marking and consultation with students in the courses in which the academic teaches into.
    • Administer/teaching/assessment via Blackboard site
    • Assist in the development of curriculum material in the discipline.
  • Actively contribute to the Institute through a range of administrative functions includin g committee roles, course coordination and proactive involvement in University activities/initiatives as appropriate.
  • Maintain membership of professional associations/industry networks and build partnerships with Higher Education Institutes.
  • Develop a public profile as a commentator on discipline/industry related issues.
  • Engage with Indigenous health organisations and leaders to build and maintain sector knowledge and expertise.
  • Willing to travel between campuses to teach.
  • Participation in programs and other activities of the Discipline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health.
  • Undertake other duties as directed as appropriate for this level of appointment.
