Job Purpose

This is a new post within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham and will be based within the Institute of Cancer and Genomics. There has been a significant expansion in the clinical activity and the research activity within medical/clinical oncology at the University Hospital Birmingham.

The post will be based in the Institute of Cancer and Genomics. Honorary Consultant status will be provided at the University Hospital Birmingham Trust. The post will facilitate the continued development of the medical/clinical oncology service. The successful candidate will be expected to build on this clinical base and help develop clinical trials, translational medicine and basic science projects through close collaboration with academic staff in the School.

Working with Prof Gary Middleton and other clinical and non-clinical academics from across the Cancer Research UK Birmingham Centre, the successful applicant will further develop the research and teaching agenda for Stratified Medicine in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences in collaboration with University Hospital Birmingham. As such we seek individuals who have the ability to develop a high-level research group as well as a proven capacity for productive collaboration. The post holder will also be a focus for excellence in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching.

 

Person Specification

  • Eligible for GMC Registration
  • Inclusion on or within 6 months of inclusion on Specialist Register in the relevant area of medical or clinical oncology
  • Higher Degree (PhD or MD)
  • Clinical Experience
  • Completed higher specialist training in either medical or clinical oncology
  • Subspecialist interest in stratified medicine

 

Research

  • Existing programme of translational and/or basic science research in stratified medicine
  • Commitment to the development of further laboratory research with a focus on stratified medicine
  • Experience in early phase trials, and the ability to drive the development of a portfolio of early phase trials in stratified medicine with associated translational and biomarker programmes.
  • National academic profile with the potential for developing local research collaborations.
