Your position

The seminar of Sociology invites applications for a two-year doctoral research position as part of a research project funded by the Swiss Network of International Studies. The successful candidate will prepare and carry out fieldwork in Greece and Turkey on the EU Hotspot Approach with a focus on the role of infrastructure in migration management. The successful candidate will work closely with the project coordinator and further principle investigators. This interdisciplinary research group (consisting of architects and social scientists) explores the operational hotspots facilities in Greece and Italy as well as in its complementary extensions in Turkey, Tunisia and Libya. In addition to spatial analysis and visual mapping of the hotspot archipelago, this project undertakes a comparative ethnographic analysis to explore the complex interactions between government policies, technical apparatuses, security and humanitarian practices and political contestations by citizens and non-citizens at the local level with regard to the Hotspot Approach.

Your profile

The successful candidate will have a foundation in migration research, EU policies, and a strong social science and qualitative methods background. Candidates should have a Master's degree in sociology, political science, or a related field. Excellent command of Greek and English, as well as previous experience in field research (ideally in Greece) are further requirements. Candidates should be committed to publishing in peer-reviewed journals, enjoy working in a research-active and interdisciplinary team and have strong organizational skills. Experience with blogging and digital media is desirable.

We offer an international, collegial and supportive work environment, membership in a highly innovative and research-active team, and excellent research infrastructure at the University of Basel. The position is funded for two years and should be combined with a PhD in Sociology. The salary corresponds to the SNSF rates for doctoral students. The starting date is 1st November 2018.
