Job Details

We seek a skilled researcher for a 1 year Senior Research Associate role. The Associate will work with the IUSSP/Gates Advisory Panel on Family Planning, Fertility and Urban Development under the supervision of Professor Susan Parnell in the School of the Geographical Sciences at Bristol University and, remotely, Professor Mark Montgomery at the New York Population Council. The Associate will undertake new individual and joint research on the genesis and evolution of the scholarship and practice links between reproductive health, family planning and urban development.

The purpose of the post is to generate one or two new high impact publishable papers that provide a new cohort of Fellows, that is being supported by IUSSP Scientific Programme on Family Planning, Fertility and Urban Development, with an up-to-date understanding of the field and its coherence, and to prepare the ground for the consolidation and expansion of new work in reproductive health and family planning that specializes in cities.

The Associate will have a PhD (or equivalent qualification) and record of publication excellence that draws on a background in urban history, the history of medicine, urban planning or demography. The ideal candidate will have a research record grounded in the cities of the global south and will have some experience of working across disciplines and with southern based scholars and policy makers. Evidence of collegiality and the ability to produce collaborative research is expected.

The post is available for a one year period, with a start date from October 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
