Job Details

The SynBio Initiative - The University of Queensland and CSIRO

The CSIRO, through the CSIRO SynBioFSP, and UQ, through AIBN, have developed an Australian-leading capability in synthetic biology as it applies to industrial biotechnology - the SynBio Initiative. The collaborative program is planned as a foundation for a long term collaborative relationship between CSIRO and UQ.

The SynBio Initiative will build around the pillars of synthetic biology, systems biology, and advanced materials in the unique industrial translational environment of the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) at The University of Queensland.

Positions at Professorial and Associate Professor level are now available. We are targeting internationally recognised experts in synthetic biology who will drive this strategic research initiative and contribute to a collaborative, intellectually stimulating, and translational environment.

The roles will establish and direct research groups of international standing, conducting high quality applied and translational research in the field of synthetic biology, to contribute to advances in areas including biomanufacturing, industrial technology, environmental remediation, biosecurity, agriculture and healthcare.

We are seeking candidates for appointment at Professorial level (Academic Level E) and Associate Professor level (Academic Level D). We will consider candidates who are already established at these levels or, perhaps high-achievers looking for their first appointment at these levels and who are inspired to take advantage of the exceptional opportunities available at AIBN.

In addition to a PhD in a discipline relevant to the emerging field of synthetic biology, ideal candidates will have an outstanding track record in research, as evidenced by high impact and cited publications, grant success, HDR completions and an established or emerging international profile. She/he will have a demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues and mentor students, early career researchers and scientists in the AIBN and CSIRO, and will provide guidance in achieving translation or commercialisation of outcomes.

This presents a unique and exciting opportunity for research leaders to build a world-class collaborative research capability in synthetic biology, significantly contributing to the broader research program of Industrial Biotechnology at the AIBN.

This is a 5-year fixed term appointment, renewable by negotiation.  A competitive remuneration, support package and flexible work arrangements will be negotiated with the successful candidate. AIBN has established a Gender Equity Commission (GEC) and have developed initiatives to address the gender imbalance to make AIBN a leading institute for supporting women in science.

For a copy of the information booklet and a confidential discussion about the role, please contact the consultant leading the search, Ms Jenny Sutton, on SynBioInitiative@odgersberndtson.com or +61 402548703.

Applications close on 29 October 2018.
