Job Purpose

This post will be fully-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The University of Birmingham has funding from the ERDF and its partners for the Advanced Materials Characterisation and Simulation Hub (AMCASH). The Hub is led by Dr Yu Lung Chiu and has state-of-the-art facilities in the School of Metallurgy and Materials on Birmingham's Edgbaston campus.

The post will be based in the School of Metallurgy and Materials at Birmingham although the post holder will be expected to work at external locations from time to time. The role will also involve collaboration with SMEs within 4 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) areas (Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP, Black Country LEP, Coventry & Warwickshire LEP and The Marches LEP. Therefore, the ability to interact with external commercial organisations is a prerequisite for this position.

The successful candidate will work with a team of other technical officers to provide focused R&D support for SME organisations in the Midlands area. The primary focus is on SMEs that are involved in polymer technology and coatings, and other materials and manufacturing processes. This is in addition to the provision of industrially relevant technical assistance to SMEs. The overall aim of the project is to develop polymer competency in SMEs and thereby preserve/create jobs in the Midlands area.

Person Specification

- The successful candidate will hold a relevant degree or masters in Materials Science, Engineering or related disciplines and also hold (or very close to the completion of) a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering or related disciplines (e.g. Applied Physics or Mechanical Engineering)
- Proven experience of supervision and management of research students and projects
- Relevant experience in the area of advanced materials characterisation; in particular, in-depth knowledge of some or all of the following techniques:
• Crystal defect and plastic deformation mechanism study
• In-situ TEM straining
• Small scale mechanical testing
• Light alloy processing and characterisation
• Chemical microanalysis using electron beams
• Electron microscopy of engineering alloys
• In-situ electron microscopy study of advanced materials
- Demonstrable proven ability to summarise complex issues/concepts and present them appropriately for a range of audiences.
- Demonstrable ability to plan, manage and prioritise own workload, respond to changing priorities and deliver innovative solutions to deadlines maintaining a consistently high standard of service and meeting client needs.
- Demonstrable ability to work effectively as part of a multi-functional team.
- Evidence of good client relationship management and interpersonal skills and an ability to work closely with other people at all levels of seniority, both within and outside the University, including external commercial organisations
- Demonstrable good communication skills: oral, written and presentational.
- Demonstrable understanding of the higher education research environment, its research functions and markets.
- Demonstrable understanding of academic research and knowledge transfer practices, funding streams and motivations.
