Job Details

We are launching an ambitious multidisciplinary research project sponsored by a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant (ERC-StG), and we are searching students who are willing to actively be part of it through a PhD.

A new generation of Tip Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) microscope is being developed in the Laboratory of Physics of Interfaces and Thin Films (LPICM) at École Polytechnique.

The project spans several disciplines such as physics, chemistry, photonics, engineering and nanotechnology.

The candidate will be responsible for the design, grow, characterisation and posterior use of plasmonic nanostructures suitable for enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and contribute to the development and posterior applications of this unique nanospectroscopy imaging instrument.

The highly motivated candidate should possess a degree in chemistry, physics or engineering, or related subjects. A materials science, physical chemistry and/or electrochemistry background would be an asset. Although not strictly necessary, a MSc. in optics, spectroscopy or (bio)photonics is highly appreciated. We value extremely high a “can-do attitude” and initiative, independent thinking and work as a team. Due to the nature of the project, skills in experimental sciences and handling sensitive equipment are required. Basic knowledge in coding (e.g. labview, matlab) will be a plus. Excellent communication skills in fluent English are necessary as the project runs in an international environment of researchers and research engineers.

We offer a fully funded PhD studentship to work on an ambitious project in a dynamic young team. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact with other scientific collaborators and attend and present his/her results in national and international conferences. We will provide support and training throughout the project, becoming proficient in the use of key physical-chemistry and nanotechnology tools and techniques such Atomic Force and Electron Microscopies, amongst others.

LPICM - Laboratory of Physics of Interfaces and Thin Films is a joint research unit (UMR 7647) between CNRS and l'École polytechnique, located in the Paris-Saclay Campus, in Palaiseau (south Paris).

We offer a fully funded PhD studentship starting September-October 2018 to work on an ambitious project in a dynamic young team.
