Job Details

The Institute of Food Technology (ITAL) opens applications for the selection of candidates for a Young Investigator (YI) scholarship in Food Biochemistry. The YI will be responsible for developing a research project to expand the Institute's activities in the area of Food Safety and Health, focusing on the obtaining and characterization of bioactive peptides with activity in non-transmissible degenerative diseases through enzymatic hydrolysis of food proteins.

The YI scholarship duration is 24 months and will be funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation - FAPESP (www.fapesp.br/en), through its Young Investigator Award Program (http://fapesp.br/en/6251), being part of the ITAL Institutional Development in Research Plan (PDIP - process # 2017 / 50349-0). The selected candidate will receive a Young Researcher Fellowship from FAPESP in the amount of BRL 8,152.20 per month. Additionally, the selected Young Researcher project, after submission to FAPESP and peer reviewing, may receive a Research Grant, as described in http://fapesp.br/en/6251

The candidate must develop a project related to the proposed topic, assist in the orientation and co-orientation of students, collaborate with other researchers of the Institute and assist in the writing and review of scientific works of the research group, as well as in the transference of technology and knowledge.

1. Description of the Institute

The Institute of Food Technology (ITAL), linked to the São Paulo's Agency for Agribusiness Technology (APTA) and to the Department of Agriculture and Food Supply of the State of São Paulo, conducts researches, develops products and technology, provides technological assistance, innovation and promotes the diffusion of knowledge in food and beverage packaging, processing and security. Today, ITAL's activities are focused in the following areas: technology, science and food quality and packaging. The technology area includes specialized units in meat products, cereals, chocolate, candy, confectionery, bakery products, dairy products, fruits, vegetables and industrial processes engineering. The division of science and quality comprises chemical, physical, sensory and microbiological laboratories. The packaging area has specialized laboratories in metallic materials, glass, plastic, cellulose and distribution and transportation packaging.

2. Position: Detailed Information / Required Experience

The YI will carry out experimental studies addressing physiological, biochemical and molecular aspects of food-derived peptides obtained by different enzymatic systems. It is expected that the obtained peptides have activity in non-transmissible degenerative diseases. It is recommended that the YI has previous research experience with enzymatic hydrolysis, proteolysis, peptide isolation, protein sequence analysis and cell culture.

The YI should domain instrumental analytical techniques such as: mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography / HPLC, microplate spectrophotometry, electrophoresis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays / ELISA.

3. This position requires applicants with profile and skills as follows:

3.1. Doctorate (PhD) in Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Food Engineering, Pharmacy and Biochemistry (Sciences) or related fields;

3.2. Experience in developing research project abroad (minimum 6 months);

3.3. Proven experience with:

  • a) Studies of techniques to determine the biological activity of food compounds;
  • b) Bioaccessibility and bioavailability studies of micronutrients in food;
  • c) Analytical methods applying electrophoresis, spectrophotometry with microplates, chromatography and mass spectrometry;
  • d) Application of enzyme immunoassays (ELISA), cell culture and biological activity assays;

3.4. Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research group, making contact with researchers who can effectively participate in the project;

3.5. Fluent English (reading, scientific writing and conversation);

3.6. High impact scientific production in the proposed project area.

4. Application documents and dates:

4.1. Application

Please submit the application electronically, including:

  • a) Curriculum vitae summary according to FAPESP instructions - http://www.fapesp.br/en/6351 - (4 pages MAX);
  • b) Three recommendation letters;
  • c) Motivation Letter presenting your adherence to the established requirements (200 words MAX);
  • d) Short research proposal relevant for the area of interest of this position (300 words MAX).

The closing date for applications is October 20, 2018.

4.2. Selection Process

The candidates' curriculum, with proven experience in the topics described above, and the submitted research proposal are key elements in the selection process.

The candidate will receive an email informing if he/she was preselected for this position by October 30, 2018. Two pre-selected candidates will be asked to submit a full Research Project.

The final decision will be informed by email and posted at http://www.ital.sp.gov.br by the evaluation committee.
