Job Purpose

The purpose of the post of Manager: International Students is to position the University of Pretoria as a destination of choice for international students and to contribute to strengthening the University's research and international profile. The position is aimed at ensuring comprehensive pre- and in-care support for international students, staff, postdoctoral fellows as well as visitors.

 

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing and co-ordinating pre- and in-care support for international students, including co-ordinating with relevant stakeholders the registration of international students at UP to ensure compliance with national immigrations requirements and UP policies;
  • Management of Semester Study Abroad, elective students and special groups;
  • Facilitating and co-ordinating joint degree programmes;
  • Overseeing immigration compliance and support services for all UP stakeholders to ensure compliance with Immigration Act and Regulations;
  • Managing the International Student Unit and staff, including developing the Unit's annual plans, budget and reports;
  • Fundraising and grant proposals writing.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • An honours degree;
  • Six years' relevant experience with two years in a managerial/supervisory role;
  • Experience in the operation of an international students office at a tertiary institution; OR
  • Experience in an international institution such as an Embassy/Diplomatic Services/Department of International Relations and Co-operation, or Department of Home Affairs Visa Section;
  • Experience in fundraising and proposal writing;
  • Driver's licence.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes)

  • Knowledge of the:
    • Functioning of an international office;
    • South African Immigration Act;
    • South African higher education landscape;
    • Global higher education internationalisation trends;
  • Ability to perform in real time environment (high stress environment);
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task;
  • Leadership capability, sensitivity to cultural diversity and the ability to handle conflict.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences

  • Master's degree in a related area (International Relations, Political Science, etc);
  • Six years' experience with four years being in a managerial/supervisory role;
  • Experience in negotiating and managing international joint degrees.

 

All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 660 186 to R 818 975 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University's contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
