Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have significant experience of advanced Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in a physical science/material characterisation environment?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research intensive universities?

We are seeking to appoint an Experimental Officer to run the University of Leeds AFM Facility, based in the School of Physics and Astronomy. The post is funded by a strategic grant award from the EPSRC designed to maximise use of existing instrumentation and to increase its effectiveness and impact. The AFM Facility houses 8 of the latest systems, with a wide range of capabilities, and some that are unique to the UK. Having grown steadily over the past 15 years, it now requires an experienced scientist to support the ever increasing number of exciting research projects taking place in the facility. You will manage the AFM laboratories, maintaining the instruments in good working order, providing support and training for new and less experienced users, and providing microscopy services to external users. One particular aim will be to increase engagement with other Faculties, particularly the Centres for Doctoral Training, and with industry, generating new projects and growing income. With a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline, you will be able to demonstrate significant experience of advanced AFM in a physical science/material characterisation environment and a motivated and pro-active approach to research and problem solving within a complex research environment.
