School of Communication and Arts

The School of Communication and Arts is a large, research-intensive unit with an international reputation for outstanding research and teaching in English Literature, Art History, Communication, Media, Cultural Studies, Film and Television Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Public Relations, Creative and Professional Writing, and Drama. It has over 50 academic and research staff and 11 professional staff. Our academics are widely published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds. The School is one of seven schools within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and is based on the St Lucia Campus.

The School has been organised to enhance research and teaching strengths in Writing and Literature.  Literary Studies and Creative Writing have both been recognised as research strengths at UQ and these fields have been awarded a top score of 5 and 4 respectively in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) research assessment exercise.

The Writing area in the School covers three aspects of writing: Creative Writing, Professional Writing and Communication; and Editing and Publishing. These interests are constituted across a major and an extended major at the undergraduate level; postgraduate coursework programs in Creative Writing and in Writing, Editing, and Publishing; the M Phil and PhD in Creative Writing, and M Phil and PhD degrees by research. Writing is also taught into the Bachelor of Communication and the Bachelor of Journalism. The area enrolments in the majors and postgraduate programs are high, including more than 40 Research Higher Degree students. The Writing area also collaborates extensively (in teaching, research and supervision) with the literary studies area.

The role

The successful appointee is to undertake teaching and administrative duties associated with the area's current and future offerings in Writing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and contribute to the continued development of our research program in Writing.

The person

Applicants should possess qualifications in relevant disciplines. They should have a strong desire to further develop a successful and highly-productive research career in Writing, proven high level teaching skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams and with industry groups.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, continuing appointment at Academic level B or C. The remuneration package will be in the range Academic Level B ($92,142 - $109,419 p.a.)/ Level C ($112,874 - $130,150 p.a.), plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range Level B: $107,806 - $128,020 p.a.; Level C: $132,062 - $152,275 p.a).
