Job Details
Your knowledge and experience will help turn research and teaching ideas into reality. Working closely with academics, students and technical staff, you will help design, manufacture, test, modify and repair experimental apparatus for a range of applications in a variety of environments. Projects are often unique, requiring innovative manufacturing ideas and techniques. You will provide technical support to students and academic and research staff and help in developing new projects, offering design ideas or solutions where possible.
Key tasks will include general engineering such as milling, turning and welding. Depending on experience, further training may be provided in specialist welding, tool-making, CNC machines and computer-controlled water jet cutting.
The ideal candidate will have a sound practical working knowledge of mechanical workshop processes. You will be able to think laterally and should be willing to learn new techniques to build complex and innovative equipment from conceptual ideas. You should be able to work from drawings or basic concept designs and be able to produce finished products without drawings, all with strong attention to detail. You will have a good understanding and attitude to health and safety. You will have good communication, interpersonal and team-working skills and be able to work with students and staff at all levels and from all backgrounds.
Even if you do not have all the skills, but can demonstrate the ability to work with your hands and are eager to pick the additional skills, we can take you at a lower level and progress you when you have gained the techniques and experience needed to fulfil the whole job.
