Reporting jointly to the Dean of the Faculty and the Associate Vice-President, Office of Faculty Development and Corporate & Foundation Relations (AVP, FD & CFR), the Assistant Dean, Advancement is responsible for faculty-based and, where appropriate, University-wide Advancement initiatives.  

The Assistant Dean, Advancement works collaboratively with the Dean, other faculty leaders and the AVP, FD & CFR, to build and advance strong personal and professional relationships that result in philanthropic contributions from individuals and organizations. They serve as a resource, advocate, and spokesperson for fund-raising efforts, manage a portfolio of approximately 75 prospective donors with the capacity to make commitments of 1M+, work independently and creatively to match donor interests with institutional and faculty priorities, develop funding proposals, and negotiates and structures complex gifts to the University; prepares effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans for current and prospective donors, sometimes involving other colleagues within the Office of Advancement, as well as faculty, deans, senior administrators, and volunteers; and ensures the timely capture and recording of data relating to cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activity that is related to the assigned prospect pool.

The Assistant Dean is also responsible for the domains of communications and alumni affairs and manages the respective staff.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Leads in strategy development and execution of faculty fundraising
  • Maintains a major donor/prospect portfolio of 75 relationships with identified capacity to give $1M or more, payable over up to five years
  • Meets annual individual and team metrics for visits, gifts, and proposals and leads project specific campaigns within the Faculty.
  • Achieves 75 personal visits with major gift prospects/donors annually
  • Works with the Dean and faculty-based leaders to establish appropriate fundraising priorities for the faculty;
  • Identify and engage volunteers as advisors to faculty fundraising strategies as appropriate
  • Designs strategies to integrate medical, dental and resident alumni relations programs into the overall advancement strategy for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry
  • Works collaboratively with the Dean and the Office of Advancement to establish and evaluate annual fundraising targets and operational plans; reports regularly to the Dean and the AVP on progress toward annual fundraising targets including quarterly updates and annual performance evaluations
  • Works in partnership with the Office of Advancement on fundraising programs
  • Represents the Faculty on university wide fundraising strategies and joint initiatives with other faculties
  • Leads the engagement between donors and Faculty academic leaders
  • Provides appropriate briefing materials to dean and other faculty academic leaders to execute strategies with donors; creates and executes plan to involve the dean in 75 face-to-face fundraising visits per year, ideally with the faculty's top prospects, and an additional 25 visits with other faculty members (e.g. heads of departments and centers)
  • Schedules and plans travel as necessary to facilitate personal visits with top prospects
  • Oversees alumni programs and services
  • Oversees strategic communications, special events, and community outreach for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry


Personal and Professional Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate university degree required; Advanced degree strongly desired; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Ten or more years' experience in major or planned gift fundraising with a track record of closing gifts of $1M and greater, preferably in higher education; related experience in sales, financial services and business development will be considered
  • 5 years of excellence in leading teams required
  • A strategic high-level thinker with an extensive background and demonstrated accomplishments in internal and external marketing and communications
  • Ability to coach and brief organizational leaders for fundraising and communications including operational planning, objective setting and establishment of fundraising priorities
  • Knowledge of a variety of fundraising tools and strategies, and demonstrated experience with activities throughout the giving cycle, including identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and the University of Alberta
  • Experience leading a communications team
  • Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the university's fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with faculty and academic leaders, volunteers, and representatives from the Office of Advancement
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities in a high-paced environment
  • Regular travel to visit donors and prospective donors as required
