Sustainable Minerals Institute

One of the UQ's eight research institutes, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) consists of some 240 staff and postgraduate students covering the areas of mining and geology, mineral processing, environment and rehabilitation, social responsibility, safety and risk, water and unconventional gas. SMI is industry-focused and consequently works with many leading global resources companies and many small-medium enterprises and suppliers. SMI interacts strongly with governments and the community.

The role

The role focuses on socio-economic and political impacts of resource extraction. The position will develop new projects in this area, including technical leadership of projects, project management and research student recruitment and supervision. Additionally, this position will contribute as chief investigator to research papers, as well as successfully secure competitive research funding from multiple sources. The position will provide expert advice and consultancy services to the mining sector and collaboration with a range of relevant experts within and outside UQ will be necessary to complement the expertise of the appointed person.

 

The person

The successful applicant will require a PhD qualification in a relevant discipline. You will have an established international reputation for quality and impact of work through publication or exhibition in internationally-recognised outlets, and have at least 10 years of experience and demonstrated expert knowledge in the area of the social impacts of mining. Significant experience in seeking and securing funding for short, medium and long-term projects/activities in a University or similar environment (e.g. in the public or private sector) will be highly regarded.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years at Academic Research level D.  

The remuneration for Academic Level D will be in the range $135,909 - $149,731 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be $159,014 - $175,185 p.a.).
