Research Fellow in the School of Geography & Environmental Science

Job Details

Population and land-use pressures on river and coastal floodplains means that flood events deposit large volumes of sediment and debris in built environments. These "unnatural" flood deposits are ubiquitous, delay emergency response, and are costly to clean up. We aim to predict how spatial characteristics of built environments control the shape, scale, movement, and distribution of flood deposits. We will measure and model flood deposits in built and non-built environments to quantify and explain their differences. This project is a formative step in transdisciplinary research into how natural phenomena interact with and impact built environments.

We seek a talented, quantitative, scientist who has facility and experience with numerical modelling and writing open-source code. Candidates should have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a relevant subject area. A background in physical geography is preferred, but not essential: candidates with a background in cognate disciplines (e.g., physics, fluid dynamics, coastal/fluvial engineering, computer science) are encouraged to apply.

The post will involve numerical modelling and data analysis, and participation in a large-scale physical experiment at the COAST Lab, a state-of-the-art facility at the University of Plymouth. Experience applying and/or modifying numerical models and analytical scripts is therefore highly desirable, but training in the necessary modelling techniques (in XBEACH) is available during the project.

The successful candidate will work closely with the two principal investigators (Dr Eli Lazarus, at Southampton, & Dr Evan Goldstein, at the University of North Carolina), and will collaborate with, and help to mentor, a PhD student also working on the project. The post is hosted in the School of Geography & Environmental Science at the University of Southampton.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
