Job Details

The University of Bristol seeks an outstanding candidate for a permanent academic appointment within the Experimental Particle Physics group. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the group's activities on the DUNE experiment and/or the Phase II upgrade of the CMS experiment. Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following are particularly encouraged to apply: neutrino physics, liquid noble gas detectors, data acquisition, high-speed electronics, and triggering. Applications from excellent candidates with different areas of expertise are also welcome.

The Bristol group has substantial responsibilities in both DUNE and the CMS upgrade, on electronics, DAQ and trigger. The successful candidate will take a leading role in these activities on either DUNE or CMS (or possibly both). In addition, the post holder would be expected to develop their own research programme, encompassing the analysis of DUNE, protoDUNE and/or CMS data.

The group's activities currently include: the CMS, LHCb, NA62 experiments at CERN; the DUNE and SoLiD neutrino experiments; the LZ experiment; Mu3e; and a strong programme of detector development and knowledge transfer. The group is preparing for the future with R&D on SiD, SHiP and various other projects.

Applicants should possess an excellent record in the development and/or technical operation of detector systems, and data analysis from particle physics experiments. Their achievement should be evidenced both by high-profile scientific output, and by leadership positions within international collaborations. The University seeks applicants with a strong commitment to all aspects of the academic mission, including research, teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate levels, outreach and knowledge transfer activities, and academic leadership and coordination. We wish to attract the most highly talented individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds and especially encourage applications from women and other groups that are under-represented in academic positions in our field.

We encourage informal enquiries about this position, via Professor Joel Goldstein, Head of Particle Physics (joel.Goldstein@bristol.ac.uk). Further details of the group's current and future experimental activities can be found at http://www.bristol.ac.uk/physics/research/particle/

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
