Job Details

Are you an ambitious and self-motivated researcher interested in helping to answer these questions?

How does deforestation impact our climate?

How do tropical fires impact the quality of air that we breathe?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research intensive Universities?

Rapid deforestation is occurring across the tropics, but we have a rudimentary understanding of the impacts on air quality, climate and the wider Earth system. We are looking for an ambitious, self-motivated researcher with excellent data analysis skills for a four-year research fellow position to help answer these questions. In this project you will combine in-situ and remote sensed data along with high-resolution atmospheric models. You will use these tools to explore connections between deforestation, fire, and regional climate in the tropics. The project will explore the impacts of both changes in the land surface and changes in atmospheric aerosol. The project will improve our understanding of the impacts of tropical deforestation and tropical fires on regional climate. You will work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure new knowledge from the project helps inform better management of the world's tropical forests. You will collaborate closely with other research fellows and PhD students as part of the DECAF (Deforestation - Climate - Atmospheric composition - Fire interactions and feedbacks) project, funded by the European Research Council. You will have (or be close to obtaining) a relevant PhD and have expertise in a relevant area of atmospheric science (or a related physical science). You will be able to demonstrate commitment to publication of original results at an international level. The project will offer the opportunity to work within a large, vibrant and internationally recognised research team and collaborate with leading scientists around the world, particularly in the tropics.
