LECTURER

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be required to:

• Provide academic and practical teaching in Directing and Theatre-making at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
• Undertake academic administration and other duties as determined by the Head of Department;
• Be involved in module and curriculum development;
• Contribute scholarly publications and DoHET accredited creative research outputs;
• Supervise creative projects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
• Supervise postgraduate research at the appropriate level;
• Participate in the Department's strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research and community engagement.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• A Master's degree in Drama/Theatre/Performance Studies specialising in directing and theatre-making;
• A track record in professional creative production as director and theatre-maker;
• Appropriate teaching experience in Directing and Theatre-making (theory and practice) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
•  Appropriate professional experience;
• The successful candidate will need to either be registered for a PhD or confirm registration within six months of appointment.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES)

• In-depth theoretical and experiential knowledge of varied directing approaches/systems
• Appropriate directing skills to work in varied genres and modes of performance
• Appropriate language and communication skills
• Appropriate computer skills;, A strong work ethic.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

• A PhD in Drama/Theatre/Performance studies
• At least three years' appropriate teaching experience at tertiary level
• A professional award for creative work
• Experience in supervising creative work at postgraduate level
• Experience in postgraduate research supervision
• Experience in intermedial theatre/performance praxis.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 470 058 to R 622 296 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University's contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
