Research Fellow - Psychology

The University of Birmingham leads an EPSRC-funded project on “Challenging Different forms of Bias in the Physical Sciences and Engineering” fields in collaboration with Aberyswyth University. We are seeking to appoint a motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow (RF) with specific knowledge and research experience in psychology, and in particular, in the areas of equality, diversity, and intergroup bias relating to ethnic, immigrant, or gender bias, and quantitative research methods.The successful candidate will work with the Psychology Department and closely with the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The work will contribute to three work packages across the project, and in particular, the RF will be responsible for investigating ethnic/gender bias in the assessment of academic outputs within the physical sciences and the Research Excellence Framework. A successful candidate will possess knowledge and experience with quantitative research methods in psychology as well as knowledge and expertise with equality, diversity, and intergroup bias research relating to ethnic, immigrant, or gender bias in psychology. The RF will be responsible for quantitative data collection and analysis as well as planning and coordinating stakeholder engagement and contributing to the dissemination of the research findings and the implementation of broader interventions within the EPSRC proposal.

Person Specification

• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree in Psychology, Social Psychology, or a closely related area
• High level analytical capability
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
• Expertise in using SPSS psychological statistical analysis software
• Expertise with using Excel, Word, and Powerpoint for data analysis, report writing, and oral presentations.

Duties will include:

• Conducting research and contribute to the research project and interventions
• Constructing and conducting experiments, interviews, and the like within the research project parameters.
