Duties and responsibilities:

  • Teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and Civilisations) using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods and technology.
  • Recruit senior students for postgraduate study.
  • Provide study guidance and supervision for final year and postgraduate students.
  • Contribute to programme development and curriculum review within the department and faculty.
  • Publish peer reviewed research outputs in accordance with the requirements of the University of the Free State.
  • Advance own area of independent research in Classical Studies, ensuring a commitment to the highest standards of ethics and integrity in research.
  • Perform administrative duties relating to teaching, research and institutional obligations.
  • Contribute towards creating a strong academic identity for the department.
  • Take a leadership role in helping to accomplish the department's long-term vision.


Inherent requirements:

Senior Lecturer:

  • PhD in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and Civilisations).
  • Latin and/or Greek (Classical and/or Hellenistic) on at least third year undergraduate level.
  • Proven experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Classical Studies.
  • Proven experience in supervision of graduated Master's students.
  • An NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of papers at national scholarly conferences.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.


Associate Professor:

  • PhD in Classical Studies (Classical Mythology and Civilisations).
  • Latin and/or Greek (Classical and/or Hellenistic) on at least third year undergraduate level.
  • Proven experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Classical Studies.
  • Proven experience in supervision of graduated Master's and/or Doctoral students.
  • Experience as external examiner for postgraduate students.
  • An NRF rating of C3 or equivalent status.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national and international scholarly conferences, where there is evidence of peer review of papers.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a specific scientific area of scholarship.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.


Required competencies:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) and, the ability to function well in the university's richly diverse working environment.
  • Excellent skilled use of Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and related programmes).
  • Organisational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to adapt to specific needs of students at the University of the Free State.
  • Strategic thinking.


Recommendations:

  • Ability to actively promote Classical Studies through community engagement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of blended learning modes of delivery such as “Blackboard”.
  • Experience in a management role in a University environment.
  • Willingness to assume the position of an Academic Head of Department.
  • Senior Lecturer:
    • Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.
  • Associate Professor:
  • Act as an editorial board member of high-quality national scholarly journals.
  • Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels, OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.


Assumption of duties:

02 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
