Job Details

The School of Languages and Cultures is one of the largest schools of languages in Australia with over 45 academic staff who are widely published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds. Research disciplines represented in the school include linguistics, applied linguistics, translation and interpreting, literary studies and cultural studies. Key research themes in the School relating to the study of language include Linguistic structure and function, Communication across cultures, and Second language studies, with research involving a wide variety of languages.

The School of Languages and Cultures has close links with a number of research institutes and centres across the University, including the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH). Academic staff in the School also play a leading role the UQ node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL). Staff and higher research degree students in the School have extensive national and international links with other leading research institutions, with international collaboration being a hallmark of much the School's research.

The role

The School is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in language and social interaction, specialising in one or more of the following areas: interactional pragmatics, conversation analysis, language and social interaction, corpus pragmatics.  The successful appointee will perform research in one or more of the areas above, provide research assistance to the Head of School, Professor Michael Haugh, and engage in collaborative research with him, undertake a minor role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision, as well as engage in service activities associated with furthering the School's research profile.

The person

Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant area of pragmatics, conversation analysis or language and social interaction.  The applicant should have a record of high quality research publications appropriate to the level of the appointment. They should also have demonstrated expertise and experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching. 

Remuneration

This is a full-time fixed term appointment at Research Academic level A.  The remuneration package will be in the range $78,552 - $87,535 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $91,906 - $102,416 p.a.)
