Job Purpose

An experienced Post-Doctoral scientist is required to conduct research within the the research group led by Ian Tomlinson, Director of the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences in the Birmingham Medical School. The group works on human cancer predisposition, functional analysis of cancer genes (including animal models), and cancer evolution.

The project involves studies of human cancers, cell models and animal models to investigate the spectrum of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) driver mutations found in human tumours. Those mutations produce the cancer-causing “oncometabolite” 2-hydroxyglutarate (2HG). Specifically, the project will investigate the hypothesis that different cancers have different IDH mutations because they create different levels of have levels of 2HG that are high enough to cause cancer but not so high as to be toxic. The results will have implications for the treatment of brain tumours, leukaemia and other cancer types.

The role will require a degree of flexibility, since it may involve working with cells, tissues and ‘omics data.
