Job Details

The University of Bristol is seeking a Dean for the Faculty of Health Sciences who can provide inspirational leadership to the Faculty and its staff, students and partners, enabling the Faculty to develop further its excellent education and research.

The Faculty of Health Sciences was launched on the 1st August 2015, bringing together the three professional healthcare programmes (medicine, veterinary sciences and dentistry) and the Centre for Applied Anatomy within a single Faculty.  This unified management structure allows us to optimise and realise the full potential of our teaching and research. Bristol is one of only two UK HEIs that offers all three clinical undergraduate programmes.

The Dean provides clear academic leadership and strategic management within the Faculty so that it achieves the highest academic standards within agreed financial targets.  Serving on the University Management Team, this is a key academic leadership position within the University of Bristol, supporting the attainment of the University's vision and overall objectives, and participating in the collective formulation and delivery of the University's academic strategy.  Naturally, the role comes with a wide range of administrative and managerial duties in terms of budget management and the maintenance of robust staff review and development processes.

We are looking for an outstanding track record of academic leadership across disciplines, and of partnership working - both internally, with academic and professional service staff, and externally (including in particular with NHS organisations).  You will also have a demonstrable commitment to the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion.  Your academic standing should be commensurate with professorial status in one or more of the disciplines within the Faculty.

You should apply online. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 31st October 2018 at midnight. The interview process will take place over two days on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th December 2018. Candidates shortlisted for interview will be expected to attend for both days.

For more information or an informal discussion please contact Professor Guy Orpen, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, at dvc@bristol.ac.uk, Professor John Iredale, Pro-Vice Chancellor: Health, at pvc-health@bristol.ac.uk, Professor Jonathan Sandy, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences dean-fohs@bristol.ac.uk, or Andrew Pearce, Health Sciences Faculty Manager, at andrew.pearce@bristol.ac.uk.

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.  We would in particular be happy to talk to candidates interested in flexible working.
