Job Purpose

We are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate in the field of Youth Mental Health at The School of Psychology, University of Birmingham. The project is funded by the European Union FP7 programme to investigate ways of improving prediction of clinical and functional outcomes from the early stages of psychotic disorders in young people. This post is fixed term until the study end in March 2019.

  Summary of Role

To assess young people with psychosis, depression, or who may be at risk of developing psychosis, as part of a European Union-funded study to improve prediction of clinical outcomes from the early stages of severe mental illness. To assist with quality management and analysis of data using machine learning processes.

  Main Duties / Responsibilities
  • To collect research data; this will be through a variety of research methods, including clinical and neuropsychological assessment, and neuroimaging
  • To collaborate closely with European partners to ensure consistency of data collection across all research sites
  • To provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
  • To assist with data quality management
  • To assist with data analysis using machine leanring techniques
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • To carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research

 

Person Specification

Essential

  • Honours degree or similar qualification in psychology or similar subject area
  • Practical experience conducting research with people with psychosis and depression using measures including the PANSS and the SCID
  • Practical experience assessing individuals who may be at risk of developing psychosis using the SIPS or CAARMS, and the SPI-A
  • Previous experience using neuropsychological assessment measures
  • Expereince and knowledge of using supervised machine leaning to analyse clinical data
  • Experience of brain scanning for research purposes
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, both in written and oral forms
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes

Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Ability to co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Ability to problem solve issues which may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively

Desirable

  • Experience working with NHS services and patients for clinical research studies
  • Knowledge and experience of analysis using neuropsychological measures
  • A masers level degree or similar qualification in psychology or similar subject area
