Job Details

The research project objective is to establish a research program in organic composting of urban green residues aiming the nutrients recycling and the development of high quality organic composts to be used in agriculture and public green spaces. The Project “Green Recycling” is an unique initiative in Brazil (an public-private partnership) and one of the results of the FAPESP Project 2016 / 50198-0 (PPPBio - Public Policies Project in Bioeconomy).

This project will investigate the production of organic compounds from an urban waste composting station for the production of organomineral fertilizer, and its potential impacts on soil quality and the environment. The project activities include: studies of different treatment systems and microorganisms population screening to understand, identify and optimize the composting process; tests new formulas of nutrient and physical-chemical quality of the products (organic composts and organomineral formulas) for application in agricultural crops and green urban spaces; and investigate the potential impacts on soil quality and environment (nutrients recycling and GHGs emission mitigation).

Composting is widely employed in the treatment of organic residues and this project should contribute for optimizing the composting process technologies. The Agronomic Institute (IAC) is a national reference in studies concerning the reuse of residues (sewage, sugarcane vinasse, other) and the PD fellowship will act in three axes: basic research (study of compost process), applied research (new formulas of organomineral fertilizers) and human resources training (mentoring of graduate students).
