Job Details

The Superconducting Materials and Large-Scale Nanostructures, SUMAN, department at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher on atomic structure imaging and analyses of YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films and nanocomposites.

The two-year position is part of the ERC Advanced Grant ULTRASUPERTAPE which aims to demonstrate an unprecedented approach for fabrication of low cost/high throughput/high performance High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Coated Conductors, based on a new ultrafast transient liquid assisted growth (TLAG) process able to reach 100 nm/s growth rates. This should push the emerging HTS industry to market. YBa2Cu3O7 films are deposited by chemical solution deposition and ink jet printing using combinatorial chemistry approaches. For the understanding of TLAG mechanisms, reaction paths and microstructural defects generation it is necessary a thorough investigation of the microstructure. Therefore, extensive experiments correlating Transmission Electron Microscopy analyses, growth mechanisms and transport properties will be carried out. To this end, the researcher will perform vital aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy studies on the films in order to probe the microstructure of the films that are created. He/she will be integrated in a team of PhD students and postdocs with chemistry, physics and materials science background.

Of particular interest is the precise measurement of local structural distortions around defects and interfaces and associated effects on electronic structure. The researcher will use the monochromated, double-Cs corrected FEI Titan 80-300 that is installed at LMA, INA, Zaragoza, and the Jeol ARM200cF installed at CNME, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, both with proven
