Job Details
Scholarships are available for sixteen projects across the eight QAEHS research themes. Students will be based at the lead supervisor's School or Centre either at St Lucia, Herston, Indooroopilly or Woolloongabba.
The projects
The scholarships are available to undertake one of sixteen environmental health sciences projects across the eight QAEHS research themes: toxicology, emerging health risks, risk assessment, risk communication, microbiology, epidemiology, regulatory science and determinants of infectious diseases.

1. Alternative matrices for personal exposure monitoring: explanted silicone prostheses and wristbands
2. Characterisation of novel substances in wastewater that select antimicrobial resistance
3. Wastewater fingerprinting as a tool to inform on community health
4. Developing passive sampler monitoring approaches for use in wastewater based epidemiology
5. Bioaccumulation potential of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) in humans
6. Calibration of new passive sampling monitoring technologies for aquatic pollutants as part of regulatory compliance monitoring
7. Bioaccessibility, interaction effects and risk assessment of mixed metals
8. Occurrence and health risk assessment of rare earth elements in the food chain
9. Communicating about uncertain environmental health risks
10. Chemical exposure concerns and how they relate to health- and environment-related decisions
11. Using phage to control opportunistic pathogens in drinking water distribution systems
12. The interaction between non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance
13. The role of family environments to the development of cardiovascular health: an intergenerational perspective
14. Regulating the design and construction of nicotine and tobacco products
15. Health education interventions to increase smoking cessation among people from priority populations
16. Understanding human-bat interactions using systems dynamic modelling
The person
Applicants must meet the requirements for admission into the UQ Graduate School PhD program (graduate-school.uq.edu.au/uq-research-degrees). Preferred education backgrounds for applicants are given under the project details at qaehs.centre.uq.edu.au/phd-scholarships.

Remuneration
Students will receive a living allowance valued at AUD$32,082 per annum (2018 rate, indexed annually) tax-free for three years with two possible six-month extensions in approved circumstances. For international students, the scholarship will include tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover. In addition, for all students, an allowance of $5,000 per annum will be available to cover travel, project or study related costs incurred in the course of their PhD candidature. The roles are full-time positions; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
