The Department of Environmental Science and Ecology at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is seeking outstanding candidates for a tenure-track faculty position in environmental microbiology at the Assistant Professor level.  Candidates conducting microbiome research using metagenomics, transcriptomics and/or other advanced “omics” approaches are particularly encouraged to apply. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, microbial ecology of ecosystems, host-associated microbiomes, infectious diseases, and environmental health. The College of Sciences at UTSA has seven Departments and several research centers including the South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Center for Research and Training in the Sciences.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in microbiology, ecology, biology, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Relevant postdoctoral experience indicating independence, trans-disciplinary research productivity and evidence of obtaining extramural funding is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful applicant is expected to develop an externally funded, innovative research program.  Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate courses consistent with the candidate’s field of expertise. Interest in and the ability to contribute to interdisciplinary research collaborations in one or more areas central to the College of Sciences and College of Engineering are expected. An ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university is required. The Department of Environmental Science and Ecology participates in PhD Program in Environmental Science and Engineering, which is co-sponsored by the College of Sciences and the College of Engineering. Additionally, the Department of Biology has a Microbiology and Immunology Research group in which the candidate would be expected to interact and mentor graduate students at the MS or PhD level.
