We are seeking applications for a full-time, fixed term position for a postdoctoral research fellow to join the team of Professor Eason and Dr Sones at the Optoelectronics Research Centre within the University of Southampton, to work on a 30-month multi-disciplinary project recently funded by the EPSRC, UK.

The research programme - ‘Optically controlled fluid flow: enabling smart paper-based medical diagnostic devices', is focussed at addressing the World Health Organisation identified needs for affordable, sensitive, specific, user-friendly, equipment-free and deliverable diagnostics for use at the point-of-care.

This research is highly multi-disciplinary and draws upon an expertise in laser physics/engineering and microfluidics, but also knowledge of bacteriology and medicine. Candidates should therefore have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification in microbiology, life sciences or related discipline, and ideally can evidence experience in the area of life-sciences, with a track record of academic and research excellence.

The Applicant:

  • The ideal candidates should have extensive knowledge and understanding of developing and implementing biochemical assays, specifically ELISAs for detection of infectious diseases and preferably, tuberculosis.
  • Further, hands-on experience of the transfer of such biochemical assays onto paper-based devices for development of lateral flow test would be desirable.
  • Experience of other lab-standard methodologies relating to detection of bacterial pathogens such as mycobacterium tuberculosis would also be desirable.
  • Previous experience relating to laser-based processing of porous materials including cellulose paper and nitrocellulose membranes for lateral flow tests and or paper-based microfluidics would be beneficial.
  • Familiarity of working within a biosafety level-3 laboratory and handling human samples is essential because of the related clinical diagnostic work within the programme.
  • Awareness and experience of implementing ethical guidelines in clinical studies is also essential.
