RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent will be responsible for:

The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;

  • Management and promotion of the Department's research profile;
  • Management and promotion of the Department's teaching and learning portfolio;
  • Human resources and performance management of the Department;
  • Ensuring scholarly academic and professional education and training;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at national and international levels;
  • Management of the finance of the Department;
  • Resource mobilisation for the Department to ensure its financial and operational sustainability.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Relevant undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences (BSc. BSc (Ed)), B Ed  (Physics/Chemistry/Life Sciences) and/or Mathematics and/or ICT;

  • A relevant doctoral degree;
  • Appointable at Associate/Full Professor level;
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
  • Experience in curriculum development;
  • Postgraduate supervision experience;
  • Publications in a field relevant to the Department;
  • Active participation in a research field relevant to the Department;
  • Membership of national and international organisations relevant to the Department;
  • Peer recognition in a field relevant to the Department.

  • Managerial skills and competencies;
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Diversity management skills;

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES

  • NRF-rating;
  • Managerial/leadership experience at a tertiary institution;
  • A strong teaching record in one of the Department's field of specialisation;
  • Experience in teacher development;
  • Academic status and international recognition in the relevant discipline.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Candidates are expected to make a 10-minute presentation to the Appointments Committee on his/her vision of the Department.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years.
