Job Purpose

This research project - ‘Exploring the relationship between ethnic diversity, intergroup relations and stress' - is an interdisciplinary ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) - funded Secondary Data Analysis Initiative programme of work based at the University of Birmingham and University of Oxford. It's overarching objective is to take a longitudinal, collaborative, interdisciplinary and policy-focused approach to investigate how the ethnic diversity of local areas influences stress (i.e., inflammatory markers and allostatic load), and how these relationships are influenced by positive and negative experiences of intergroup contact and threat.

Summary of role

To work individually and as part of the project team on the ESRC Secondary Data Analysis Initiative grant ‘Exploring the relationship between ethnic diversity, intergroup relations and stress'. The post holder will be the primary researcher and will undertake research under the supervision and guidance of principle investigator Dr Matthew Bennett and Professor Miles Hewstone. The primary role of the researcher will be to use large-scale panel surveys and contextual and administrative data to investigate how the ethnic diversity of local areas influences stress (i.e., inflammatory markers and allostatic load), and how these relationships are influenced by positive and negative experiences of intergroup contact and threat. The purpose of the role is to develop and deliver high quality research that supports the delivery of the specified project outputs. The post holder will be expected to work closely with Dr Matthew Bennett in Birmingham. The post is based at the University of Birmingham.

Duties

  • Use large-scale panel surveys and contextual and administrative data to investigate how the ethnic diversity of local areas influences stress (i.e., inflammatory markers and allostatic load), and how these relationships are influenced by positive and negative experiences of intergroup contact and threat.
  • Develop and deliver high quality research that supports the delivery of the specified project outputs.
  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results

 

Person Specification

  • A Degree in economics, political science, statistics, social policy, sociology, or a related discipline, with demonstrable evidence of training in quantitative methods.
  • A completed PhD in one of the above disciplines, with demonstrable evidence of significant quantitative work (candidates near to completion of their PhDs will also be considered).
  • Substantive expertise in diversity and health or related academic area.
  • Experience of research demonstrating an ability to manipulate and analyse large-scale panel datasets.
  • Experience with multilevel and longitudinal modelling techniques, including collecting and merging contextual-level information from multiple data sources.
  • Demonstrable quantitative analytical skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of use of appropriate statistical packages (e.g. STATA (preferred), R).
  • Familiarity with contemporary Sociological issues and debates.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of research team.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to different audiences, including non-specialist, non-academic audiences.
