The Division of Surgery would hereby like to invite applicants who have a particular interest in teaching, curriculum development and student development and support to apply for this part-time lecturer post in Surgery.

 

Duties

  • Appropriately managing logistical requirements of undergraduate medical courses. This will involve the coordination of lecturers, administrative staff, timetables and venue bookings for these courses;
  • Maintaining and assisting with creating new questions for the exam question database in Surgery;
  • Delivering teaching and assessment activities to undergraduates, including lectures, practical skills teaching, and setting/marking coursework;
  • Selecting appropriate assessment instruments, assessing the work and progress of students and providing constructive feedback to students;
  • Seeking ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback;
  • Organising the availability of teaching materials to support students' learning, especially for students training at distant sites;
  • Planning and developing online teaching material, including video and audio material;
  • Regularly communicating with student groups to ensure efficient running of courses;
  • Carrying out designated administrative duties, including, for example, committee work, course administration, etc.;
  • Being responsible for the database management associated with teaching, learning and assessment;
  • Closely liaising with course administrator, programme convener and the head of the Department.

 

Requirements

  • An MBCHB degree with interest in the field of medical education and knowledge and skills in general surgery;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, in writing and verbally;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and students and to work well in a team;
  • Ability to work autonomously, under pressure, and meet deadlines;
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel;
  • Interest and/or experience in an online/E-learning education platform (Learner Management Systems);
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail;
  • Registration with the HPCSA.
