The aim of the Central Analytical Facility (CAF) www.sun.ac.za/caf  is to ensure optimal utilisation of expensive multi-user research equipment in the service of the research community of Stellenbosch University, and the South African research and development sector in general. The Node for Infection Imaging (NII) at Tygerberg Hospital is a node of the Nuclear Medicine Research Initiative (NuMeRI), managed by CAF and includes a new state-of-the-art PET/CT facility. The NII will provide the necessary expertise and support to enable the PET/CT facility to deliver the maximum possible benefit to research to the South African research community. The aim of the NII will be to support and advance molecular medicine research within the nuclear medicine community of South Africa.

Duties:

The Director will be responsible for all aspects of the functioning and governance of the facility, including:

  • Managing staff within the unit;
  • Planning the expansion of the nuclear medicine capability and research areas in accordance with national and international trends;
  • Writing grant applications to secure funding for new equipment;
  • Planning the services provided by NII so that the research interests of the national research community are best served, and the unit can function cost effectively and sustainably;
  • Planning and implementing responsible management of the equipment, from maintenance through to adequate provision for unexpected interruptions of equipment breakdown or radiopharmaceutical/electrical supply;
  • Having policies and measures in place for the responsible management of risk of radiation exposure for all involved;
  • Refining existing protocols and developing new protocols for PET/CT analysis of different types of patients/subjects, so as to maximise sustainability and research impact of the unit;
  • Liaising with role players to ensure a reliable [18F]FDG supply;
  • Leading the team in developing new radiopharmaceuticals in addition to [18F]FDG for clinical research useful in the context of the greater NuMeRI objectives;
  • Managing the general administration of the unit, including reporting to CAF administration;
  • Managing relationships and communication with clients of the unit;
  • Managing waste;
  • Marketing the facility;
  • Ensuring a close and effective operational relationship with SU Nuclear Medicine to facilitate the smooth operation of the shared radiopharmacy and parallel PET/CT imaging facilities;
  • Contributing towards the combined clinical service of NII and SU Nuclear Medicine, including limited clinical reporting and overtime responsibilities;
  • Reporting to the NuMeRI steering committee/Board and alignment of the NII with the national goals set by or for NuMeRI.


Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Nuclear Medicine;
  • HPCSA registration as a Nuclear Medicine Physician;
  • Significant experience in clinical PET/CT interpretation;
  • Relevant research experience as evidenced by publications in accredited journals that were a direct result of the applicant's own work;
  • Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate towards joint solutions;
  • Expertise in technical aspects of PET/CT.


Candidates selected for interview will be expected to complete practical tests relating to some of the requirements.
