The Network of English Language Enhancement (ELE_net) is part of the Office of the Provost. It was established in September 2014 to provide effective solutions for the enhancement of English language skills across AKU. 

ELE_net functions as a distributed network. This means that it works closely with other parts of the University to identify English language needs and find effective solutions. ELE_net is directly involved in designing and delivering English courses. It also works with internal and external partners to do this. 

Aga Khan University invites applications for the position of Assistant Director, ELE_net. The person appointed could be based in Dar-e-Salaam Kampala, Karachi, London or Nairobi.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • devising an ELE_net standards checklists based on international best practice in Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • reviewing existing ELE_net practices and identifying areas in need of improvement
  • monitoring the design and delivery of ELE_net services on a regular basis to ensure agreed standards are met and quality enhanced
  • carrying out an ELE_net audit to assess how technology is being used and evaluate its effectiveness
  • liaising with AKU IT and Blended Learning Network to keep abreast of key developments across AKU impacting on the use of technology for teaching, learning and administrative purposes
  • assisting the Director during the AKU annual planning process to identify the resources needed to deliver ELE_net's planned activities
  • allocating resources required to deliver ELE_net's planned activities, particularly the deployment of ELE_net teaching staff
  • monitoring the use of resources to ensure the delivery of planned activities do not exceed capacity of resources available and other related costs
  • managing ELE_net teaching staff, including carrying out performance reviews
  • planning development activities in a careful rigorous manner with a sharp focus on objectives and resources available
  • implementing activities on time and within budget
  • teaching face-to-face classes and / or moderating online courses
  • assessing and reporting on course participant performance
  • deputizing for the Director during periods of absence.


Requirements

You should have:

  • a Master's degree in a relevant subject area (e.g. Applied Linguistics) from an HEC recognized or foreign university/institution with qualification of expert practitioner in TESOL (e.g. Cambridge Assessment DELTA)
  • excellent communication skills in written and spoken English (Minimum C1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference - CEFR)
  • formal training / qualification in business or management studies (preferable)
  • at least seven years' work experience in teaching English as an additional language to adults (including at least two years' in higher education) with significant involvement in the development, delivery, improvement and maintenance of high quality English language courses and services
  • high level of IT skills and a willingness to integrate technology into everyday work practices
  • high level of understanding of eLearning and the competencies required to develop and implement effective eLearning solutions
  • ability to set up and manage effective operational systems
  • excellent leadership skills
  • willingness to travel on a regular basis, especially to areas in which AKU operates.
