Goals:

The goals of the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is to:

  • Increase knowledge and application of modern epidemiological and biostatistical techniques among undergraduate and postgraduate students, healthcare professionals and researchers;
  • Increase the quality and output of research in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences;
  • Conduct and support relevant systematic reviews and primary research related to evidence-informed health care;
  • Conduct methodological research in epidemiology, biostatistics, evidence-based health care and knowledge translation to address unique challenges that may arise;
  • Provide epidemiological and biostatistical collaboration;
  • Promote the use of best evidence in healthcare decision-making and the uptake of current best evidence in healthcare policy and practice.

Duties:

The duties of the Senior Lecturer will fall within five broad umbrella themes: Teaching, research, mentorship, funding generation and coordination of higher degree programmes:

  • Managing and coordinating activities in the epidemiology postgraduate academic programmes;
  • Teaching, learning and assessment of postgraduate students taking epidemiology programmes, including advanced epidemiologic methods;
  • Providing research supervision and mentorship of masters and doctoral candidates, including other higher degree research programmes within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences;
  • Active involvement in collaborative engagements, including actively looking for and securing funding or third-stream income for academic and research enhancement;
  • Active publications of research and scholarly work in high impact peer reviewed journals;
  • Leading independent research while working collaboratively with members of the Division, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and beyond;
  • Supporting implementation of Divisional, Departmental and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Strategic Plans;
  • Adhering to Faculty values at all times.

 

Requirements: 

  • Master's qualification in Epidemiology supported by published research, or a PhD in Epidemiology;
  • Track record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Active engagement in research collaborations with evidence of securing external funding for research projects;
  • Experience in the teaching and learning of Epidemiology at postgraduate level;
  • Experience in mentorship and support of postgraduate students;
  • A comprehensive understanding of current epidemiological and research methodologies.
  • Previous experience in conducting epidemiological studies, including systematic reviews;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills;
  • Familiarity with evidence-based research principles and methodologies;
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with people from cross disciplinary environments and to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
